Hypertension
High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is an increase in the amount of force that blood exerts on blood vessels as it travels through the body. Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of blood vessels as your heart pumps blood.
Symptoms Of Advanced Hypertension
The majority of people with high blood pressure have no symptoms. However, once blood pressure reaches a certain level, the following symptoms appear:
- Double vision or blurred vision
- Light-headedness/Fainting
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Palpitations in the heart
- Nosebleeds
- Breathing difficulty
- Vomiting and/or nausea
Causes Of Hypertension
Although the exact cause is unknown, certain conditions, traits, or habits may increase your risk. These are known as risk factors and include the following:
- Non-modifiable risk factors: These are factors that cannot be changed and are irreversible. The more of these risk factors you have, the more likely you are to develop HBP.
- Modifiable risk factors: These are risk factors that can be changed, treated, or controlled with medications or lifestyle changes.
- Excessive alcohol consumption over a long period of time.
- There is little to no physical activity.
- Excessive salt consumption in excess of the recommended daily sodium intake of 1,500 to 2,300 mg.
- Smoking and/or drug abuse history
- Excessive emotional stress
